"Mama."

The woman sitting across the room looked up
startled. "Honey! Come quick! He just said his
first word!" She picked up the little boy and
said, "That's right baby. Mama's here." This
however seemed to upset the baby and he started to
scream 'mama' over and over again. "William?
William, what's wrong?"

***

Scully woke with a start, William's screams still
echoing in her ears. She glanced over at Mulder,
who had actually managed to fall asleep. When they
had first become involved she wouldn't have
thought about waking him to talk about a dream but
so many things had changed since then. She had
gone too many sleepless nights where all she
wanted to do was talk to him, be comforted by him,
or just held. "Mulder?" she nudged him to try and
wake him. It took a couple minutes to wake him but
once his eyes fluttered open he smiled sleepily at
her.

"What's wrong Scully?"

"Mulder... what do you know about dreams?"

"Mmmm, you want the psychological or paranormal
answer?" he asked, stifling a yawn.

"I want your answer."

This time he wasn't able to stop the yawn. "Okay
then, why don't you tell me about the dream and
then I'll give you 'my answer'." So she told him.
She told him about William, the woman (who she
assumed was the woman who had adopted him), and
the screams. Once she was done Mulder looked at
her slightly worried but mostly sad. "Have you had
these dreams before? Or something like them?" She
nodded slowly. "When?"

Scully hesitated for a moment and then said, "When
I thought you'd died in New Mexico I had a dream
that had a similar feel to it. I can't really
explain it. It's like I'm not really sleeping,
just somewhere else. That time you'd told me that
you were alive. And after your abduction... Well you
remember when you asked me why I hadn't sold your
apartment or anything? I told you I kept it for
sentimental reasons. Well that was half true. The
other part was that I had this dream after the
funeral where you came and told me that you'd be
back. Mulder... you've got to believe me... Will needs
us."

***

She finally got William to go to sleep. She had
never thought that this would be so hard. William
had been a very well behaved baby ever since he
had arrived but that's all he was. Well behaved.
He seemed to view them as simple acquaintances.
And now he had called out for his mother and had
meant another woman.

She looked down at William's sleeping form and
shook her head, turned, and left the room.

Mulder walked to the counter in the office of the
motel so that he could check them out, someone was
bound to think to look for them in Roswell
eventually. Much to his frustration no one was
behind the counter so he rang the bell but no one
came out to help him. So he pounded on it a couple
more times.

"You know that won't help, he's in the little
manager's room," said an amused voice from behind
him. He turned around and saw Melissa Scully
standing there with her arms crossed and a grin on
her face.

"Hey Melissa," he said nonchalantly, he was almost
getting used to these 'visitations'. "And what can
I do for you this fine morning?"

"Oh I'm just here to vouch for my sister. Don't
want the love of her life thinking she's crazy now
do I?"

"I don't think she's crazy."

"But you don't believe her," this was not a
question and they both knew it.

"So... what? You're saying that Will does need our
help? That these are more than just dreams of a
mother who wants her son back?"

"What I'm saying is that you need to listen to
Dana, she knows what she's talking about. And like
she told you, it's not the first time she's had
these dreams, although she has had more dreams
than she has admitted to you or herself."

"You're telling me that Scully is psychic?"

Melissa smiled again and shook her head. "In tune
is probably a better phrase." She paused and then,
acting as if she had recalled something mildly
important, said, "Oh by the way. Buffalo is lovely
this time of year. Ever been?" She set a piece of
paper on the counter. Mulder glanced at it and
when he looked up she was gone.

"May I help you?" the attendant was back.

***

There was a loud knock on the door and, afraid
that it would wake the baby, she ran quickly to
open the door but was immediately sorry that she
did. She let out a scream and her husband came
running to see what was wrong but neither of them
stood a chance against the menacing figures that
stood in the doorway.

***

"Mulder why are we going back up north? We have no
chance of actually making it across the border
anymore; we have to lay low for a while."

"Don't worry we're not going to the border. I was
just thinking that Will might want to see his
parents and I hear Buffalo is nice this time of
year."

Scully stared at him for a moment as if trying to
decipher whether he was joking or not. "You found
him?"

"Hey I still have some contacts," was his
lighthearted reply, not quite willing to have the
'I see dead people' conversation yet. They had
enough to worry about at the moment.

"So what's your plan? We're just going to ring the
doorbell and say 'Hi we're William's really
parents. You must be the people who have our baby
boy now. It's a pleasure to meet you. Do you mind
if we come in'?"

Mulder just smiled at her and said, "Go with it
Scully."

***

When they pulled up in front of the house they
could both tell that something was wrong. The
house looked peaceful enough but there was an
almost eerie calm that was settled over the place.
They walked up the front steps and rang the
doorbell. They waited several minutes but nothing
happened. Mulder turned the doorknob and it opened
easily. Scully was about to warn him that they
couldn't go inside without probable cause, old
habits die hard.

They both drew their guns, not knowing whether
they would help or not, and walked inside. They
didn't find anything that looked out of the
ordinary until they reached the nursery.
Everything was turned upside-down, like there had
been a big struggle.

Everything, that is, except the crib. Scully ran
over to it and there sleeping like he didn't have
a care in the world was William. As soon as Scully
reached the crib his eyes popped open and he broke
out into his toothless baby grin. "Mama," he
stated simply but this was almost too much.

Scully lifted him carefully out of his crib
carefully, as though she was afraid he might
break. Mulder walked over to them and embraced
them both. It was the first time they had been all
together in far too long.

In the mist of their reunion both had failed to
notice the figure hiding in the corner of the
room.

"I see you found him." They turned around and
standing there was Jeffery Spender. "I wasn't sure
you were coming so I stayed behind to make sure he
turned out alright."

Mulder and Scully exchanged glances and then
Scully asked the obvious question, "What are you
doing here?"

"I heard a... rumor... that they were going to come
after him again. I was to late to save the couple
but they put up a good fight so it took awhile for
them to actually reach William."

"How did you stop them then?"

Spender held up a piece of rock that looked like
the magnetite from the quarry. "Handy stuff don't
you think?" He didn't wait for them to answer
however. "You three should probably get out of
here before the police arrive. When they came for
him they weren't very quiet and unless all of the
neighbors are deaf they should be here soon."

Not knowing what else to do they started to leave,
as they past Spender Mulder stuck out his hand and
shook Spender's, Scully gave him a small smile,
and Will gurgled. They grabbed some of Will's
things, not knowing when they would be able to
stop for supplies, and left.

Due to the motion of the car Will fell asleep very
quickly under the watchful eyes of his parents. He
was back where he was supposed to be. They all
were.
